    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I was a software engineer intern. Daily I would pair on tasks to write new features for SQL Monitor. I mainly wrote C# and Typescript. I would often do small tasks on my own, while larger tasks were done in pairs/mobs. Most days I would have a few zoom calls - some with my team and some with other teams in the company. I would give stand-ups and other meetings as regularly as any other team member.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have learnt C# and Typescript which I had little experience in before. I have developed my confidence in giving and participating in meetings. I have gained knowledge as to what life is like for a Software Engineer. I have become more disciplined in my coding practices. I have learnt to properly communicate and share information within a semi-large company.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • At the beginning I took on few tasks and mainly spent my time being introduced to different parts of the companies and pairing with developers (The other dev typically took the lead). By the end of the internship I had almost as much responsibility as full-time software engineers - I picked up tasks freely on my own, I lead meetings, and I took a leading role when pairing with other devs. I was expected to work and act like any other dev, and I was supported if I ever felt lost.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I would say I received the right amount. I was given plenty at the beginning and this reduced as I became more confident and able.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • It was very friendly and welcoming. People were understanding if I lacked knowledge and took a nice relaxed approach to my internship. I was given the opportunity to choose what I was interested in (Within the boundaries of the project) and this then determined the work I did. The atmosphere was very nice.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed it and it gave me a good idea as to what being a Software Engineer is like - and this was my primary goal. I also developed many new skills within and outside computing.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Redgate
  • Talk about teamwork you have done in your CV - it seems to be a very important aspect of the job. Talk about projects you have done (If you have done any). Best of all talk about a project you have done in a team - skills you learnt in this will best carry over to the job.
