Overview
My role involved participating in team meetings, learning more about the overall company and insurance industry. My main focus was on my research project which was overseen by my supervisor. Day-to-day I would have meetings with people from different sectors depending on my interests, and I was able to network.
Skills
I developed my professional communication skills and teamwork. My confidence grew throughout my placement and by the end of the week I gave a presentation, met lots of new people and learnt how to conduct myself during meetings. I built on my existing research skills, and learnt how to research professionally as opposed to academically.
Responsibilities
I was given an adequate amount of responsibility. I had independence in external/internal meetings, and came up with my own questions to ask etc, but I was always able to ask my supervisor for help if needed. Similarly, I did my project independently but was able to check things with my supervisor. Time management was ultimately my responsibility, and I was not micromanaged at all.
Support & Guidance
I received a lot of support and guidance as needed. My team was very friendly, and made it clear from the start that they were always there if I needed anything. My supervisor would also check in with me throughout the day, and we had a meeting at the start and end of each day to review tasks and set goals. Everyone was very happy to help.
Culture
The company culture and atmosphere was very welcoming. I would be happy to work there as the workspace is open, friendly, and there are lots of social events. During my placement I attended two diversity initiatives, a cause I feel passionately about, and I believe there are big changes coming. It was also interesting to see the ABI values incorporated around the office and in meetings.
Your Impressions
I greatly enjoyed my internship. It exceeded my expectations, I was given a lot of independence, and everybody was willing to take time out of their day to tell me more about their work. The company culture was forward-thinking and has strong core values which I think are important. My team also made a big effort to include me, especially when I was nervous at first. I would love to go back in the future.
Yes
Research the different sectors and make a quick list of what you are interested in- people will ask! When I was writing my cover letter, I researched the ABI's latest projects and spoke about ones I was excited by. This made a difference as my supervisor later asked me about them, and set up meetings with different sectors for me. I wish I had known that there is a lot more to insurance than contracts, and it has a big social impact.
