    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My role involved participating in team meetings, learning more about the overall company and insurance industry. My main focus was on my research project which was overseen by my supervisor. Day-to-day I would have meetings with people from different sectors depending on my interests, and I was able to network.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I developed my professional communication skills and teamwork. My confidence grew throughout my placement and by the end of the week I gave a presentation, met lots of new people and learnt how to conduct myself during meetings. I built on my existing research skills, and learnt how to research professionally as opposed to academically.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given an adequate amount of responsibility. I had independence in external/internal meetings, and came up with my own questions to ask etc, but I was always able to ask my supervisor for help if needed. Similarly, I did my project independently but was able to check things with my supervisor. Time management was ultimately my responsibility, and I was not micromanaged at all.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received a lot of support and guidance as needed. My team was very friendly, and made it clear from the start that they were always there if I needed anything. My supervisor would also check in with me throughout the day, and we had a meeting at the start and end of each day to review tasks and set goals. Everyone was very happy to help.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture and atmosphere was very welcoming. I would be happy to work there as the workspace is open, friendly, and there are lots of social events. During my placement I attended two diversity initiatives, a cause I feel passionately about, and I believe there are big changes coming. It was also interesting to see the ABI values incorporated around the office and in meetings.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I greatly enjoyed my internship. It exceeded my expectations, I was given a lot of independence, and everybody was willing to take time out of their day to tell me more about their work. The company culture was forward-thinking and has strong core values which I think are important. My team also made a big effort to include me, especially when I was nervous at first. I would love to go back in the future.

  • 7. Would you recommend Association of British Insurers to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Association of British Insurers
  • Research the different sectors and make a quick list of what you are interested in- people will ask! When I was writing my cover letter, I researched the ABI's latest projects and spoke about ones I was excited by. This made a difference as my supervisor later asked me about them, and set up meetings with different sectors for me. I wish I had known that there is a lot more to insurance than contracts, and it has a big social impact.
