Overview
1 week of training. 6 weeks of rotations across the trading floor. 3 weeks spent on one of the 6 desks in the rotations. In the rotations I spent most of my day on Zoom calls with members of the team, getting to know them as well as learning about the desk. On evenings I would work on a task for the end of the week, usually a stock pitch.
Skills
I had the opportunity to develop a new process for a daily task on one of the desks I rotated on. This required the use of VBA, which I had never used before. I spent some time teaching myself the basics of VBA to complete the project. Additionally, I had the opportunity to work on a project which required writing code in Python and had several opportunities to improve presentation skills.
Responsibilities
When given a project, I was typically fully responsible for it. However, most of my time was spent meeting with people from across the business, meaning I was not actively working on tasks for most of the internship.
Support & Guidance
Everyone I met with were very helpful and would happily go out of their way to help me / answer my questions. At the start of the internship I was assigned a buddy who was also extremely helpful. Overall, I was very happy with the support I received.
Culture
Inclusive and friendly best describe the culture in my opinion. Jefferies have several Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) which represent employees from diverse backgrounds. Employees who do not necessarily belong to a given ERG are still encouraged to attend events and support the group.
Your Impressions
Despite being a virtual internship, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Jefferies. Each team I spent time with were very welcoming and were keen to teach me about the desk and their roles. When given a project, I was usually given full responsibility for it and was often encouraged to think of ways a desk could improve a process. I felt part of the team from minute one and would gladly return to Jefferies in the future.
