    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • 1 week of training. 6 weeks of rotations across the trading floor. 3 weeks spent on one of the 6 desks in the rotations. In the rotations I spent most of my day on Zoom calls with members of the team, getting to know them as well as learning about the desk. On evenings I would work on a task for the end of the week, usually a stock pitch.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I had the opportunity to develop a new process for a daily task on one of the desks I rotated on. This required the use of VBA, which I had never used before. I spent some time teaching myself the basics of VBA to complete the project. Additionally, I had the opportunity to work on a project which required writing code in Python and had several opportunities to improve presentation skills.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • When given a project, I was typically fully responsible for it. However, most of my time was spent meeting with people from across the business, meaning I was not actively working on tasks for most of the internship.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Everyone I met with were very helpful and would happily go out of their way to help me / answer my questions. At the start of the internship I was assigned a buddy who was also extremely helpful. Overall, I was very happy with the support I received.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Inclusive and friendly best describe the culture in my opinion. Jefferies have several Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) which represent employees from diverse backgrounds. Employees who do not necessarily belong to a given ERG are still encouraged to attend events and support the group.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • Despite being a virtual internship, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Jefferies. Each team I spent time with were very welcoming and were keen to teach me about the desk and their roles. When given a project, I was usually given full responsibility for it and was often encouraged to think of ways a desk could improve a process. I felt part of the team from minute one and would gladly return to Jefferies in the future.
