Overview
Everyday would start with departmental meeting at 8:30. At the intern level, your role would be to support on gathering research or analysing companies for your manager, helping out wherever you can. Most of your time would be devoted to your internship project, which differs year to year. We worked on obtaining our own ESG ratings for set companies and analysing implications on their bonds.
Skills
I learned so much during the internship. Not only was the ESG perspective and research completely new to me, but I was also exposed greatly to the credit side of companies. I developed my Bloomberg skills and quantitative skills, and gained own perspectives with analysing macro information. Everyone was also really helpful and would even help organise mini training sessions if needed.
Responsibilities
Complete discretion was given for your internship project, which you have to present to portfolio managers at the end of the summer. They really do take your opinions into account when considering the companies in question. I was also given the opportunity to lead ESG meetings with certain companies and ask questions. I would say that I have been given as much responsibility as possible, if not more, for an intern level.
Support & Guidance
I have received countless support from everyone on the floor and in my team. They would try their best to respond to my questions and if I needed support they would help set up training sessions in certain areas. Introductory sessions were also organised with grads and other departments, and we were also given opportunities to shadow traders and learn first hand. I particularly enjoyed this part of the culture at Fidelity International.
Culture
Really friendly and helpful. No one is too busy to lend you a helping hand and your manager is always there to support you. No one would say no to a coffee chat and everyone seems to give off a positive atmosphere. I really loved the culture here.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed the culture and the work set, which really tests your research, analytical and critical thinking skills. I loved the culture of the company and enjoyed working with my colleagues. I think the training given at the start could be improved, as it didn't tie in too much with credit research but was rather general. However, the support given throughout the internship more than made up for it.
Yes
Be yourself, be inquisitive, be brave to voice your own perspectives and be critical in your thinking.
