Overview
We had the opportunity to begin with a series of webinars on Jefferies' front-office functions, before panel discussions by current analysts and the firm's diversity networks. I thoroughly enjoyed these highly engaging and interactive sessions - the symposium's organisers allocated students ample time to ask questions. As someone with pre-existing start-up/corporate incubation experience, I especially enjoyed MD Nandan Shinkre's overview of Jefferies' European technology IB practice.
Skills
I very much gained a stronger understanding of analysts' day-to-day roles within the industry, along with the "softer" skills required to thrive - communication skills, attention to detail and proactiveness. The analyst panel also explained how one should navigate through the recruitment process before upcoming summer internship applications, and I appreciated their frank thoughts on the challenges they personally faced.
Business Insight
Highly insightful - was able to get a better understanding of how Jefferies differentiates itself from larger bulge-bracket banks (which often have lending/financing functions on top of advisory ones), and the highly meritocratic culture that the firm offers
Culture
Highly friendly and approachable - strong emphasis on meritocracy and promoting the best people regardless of background. This was clear from the senior professionals (all of whom hailed from diverse backgrounds) that we spoke to.
Your Impressions
The symposium overall was highly interactive and engaging - would definitely recommend this to other incoming second-year students in future!
