    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I led a project on operational resilience and third party outsourcing. I read around the topic, then based on research set up meetings with members and experts in that area. These included some consultancies, insurance organisations and insurance members globally. Some countries included New Zealand, Canada, America and Germany. I then presented and complied my research into a presentation that will help inform future ABI and international policy positions on operational resilience and outsourcing.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Yes, I learnt how to grasp a new area in s short amount of time and understand this. I was able to connect with people globally and build rapport with them. I was also able to take on real responsibility within this role as I was able to actually do and not just shadow.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Absolutely, my point of call was very facilitating when I had questions but fully allowed me to conduct meetings, organise them, research and have my own touch on these. I was guided and I did have regular meetings which could have been added or taken away but I was truly allowed to be independent.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Just as much as I needed, I would have 2 meetings a week which could be adjusted. When in the office I was very near my point of call and when at home I had instant teams messenger and emails which was great.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Very very inclusive and friendly, there is something in the calendar every week and the colleagues would invite you out when in the office be that for lunch or an after-work social. Everyone would say hello around the coffee machine and I got plenty of welcome emails. The company treats their staff well too with various perks and they do have various initiatives such as D & I webinars.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed my time at the ABI, it went so fast! The work was challenging but so engaging, there was a good hybrid format which was handy. My line manager was very helpful and encouraging. I particularly liked the fact that you are encouraged to apply even if you do not come from an insurance background.

  • Please do apply regardless of whether you have a lot or no knowledge of the field. The company is lovely, as is the office and the people. Really consider their values and whether they align to yours, be yourself and go for it. The ABI have lots of different teams which is particularly interesting so be open to meeting lots of people outside your team.
