Overview
I was assigned to a team (~10 people) and put on one project. I had regular meetings with my buddy and a weekly meeting with my manager. Occasional meetings with other people in the same team. Main responsibilities involved - Investigating useful data sources - Defining, testing and evaluating approach(es) to the project - Ultimately deploying a model was the goal.
Skills
New Skills - Learned some Scala - Knowledge about deploying models - Learned how to work with Databricks - Learned spark - Learned loads about how the business goals interact with machine learning models Developed skills - Learned more about ML - Learned about recommender systems - Improved python - Improved SQL - Improved version control
Responsibilities
Yes, generally I was responsible for my project and presenting the results related to it. Supervisors would suggest directions and give advise but overall it was my responsibility to choose what tasks I worked on, and how I did these tasks. I was encouraged to interact with people outside of the team, exposing me to other parts of the business.
Support & Guidance
Loads of support. First I had a direct buddy who I was working on the project with. I talked (message or call) to them almost every day. Line manager was a bit less hands on but still there to help and I had weekly meetings. Access to other team members in a slack channel. There were data engineers in the team who could help also.
Culture
Really relaxed atmosphere. There was an optional company event on almost every week. Team meetings every week. Plenty opportunities to go to evening socials with colleagues. It would be even better if the internship was in person.
Your Impressions
Enjoyed most of the internship. The fact that I was essentially given ownership of a project made it really fun. The support around you is also excellent and adds a bit of variety to the work.
Yes
The interview process was quite long and thorough as you're given loads of coding challenges. For the person to person interviews most of it was job specific case study type questions. I would have a couple STAR answers prepared.
