Overview
Role was to help test an automation tool developed by the Customer Technical Policy team as well as make improvements where possible to current processes. The whole placement was done remote and the typical day started at 9:00am, checking emails, attending online teams meetings and actually doing the work of testing the automation tool. Typically the day finishes at 5:00pm.
Skills
Yes definitely. At National grid they do encourage there staff to take timeout and learn new skills on the job. They have courses and do have a coding café during the week so you can study in a group and share coding knowledge. They also use learning suites such as LinkedIn learning, which I have to say is really good and it helped me improve my excel and python skills.
Responsibilities
I was given quite a lot of responsibility in my internship. I was actually encouraged to speak to other people in National Grid and to get to know how the business works. Tasks that I did in the automation did have a positive impact on the team as well as other teams with in ESO. In general the biggest responsibility I had there was simply being proactive.
Support & Guidance
While I was there, national grid gave a lot of support and guidance with us. They would invite speaker about how to maintain a good work ethics and have a healthy balance of work and life styles. Also they encourage the fact that once 5:00pm came, you should stop working and relax for your health. My line managers and other team members where really supportive, and friendly. In general national grid are very friendly.
Culture
Was really relaxed, very inclusive culture. It’s nice to be told that before covid they have a gym and prayer room in the office. The main thing about national grid is that they are really friendly people and supportive of one another and within there local community. As well as supporting career development and personal development.
Your Impressions
What I enjoyed the most was making new connections with people who are in industry. The people I met have not just gave me a good insight into how national grid works and operates, but also how to become a proper qualified engineer I.e chartered engineer, and what the process is like. If I was asked if I could go back and work for them. 100% Yes.
Yes
Be relaxed but really and I mean really know know your stuff in terms or the whole power sector. Know the challenges and problems facing this industry and show that you are willing to adapt and learn. Also share your opinions on what needs to change to meet demands of the power sector.
