The Role
Great people made this placement a good job. An unfortunate staffing policy meant many people left through the year but those of us remaining pulled together to keep the atmosphere upbeat.
If you are willing to pull your weight, people will appreciate and recognise that. The camaraderie extends to out of office hours if you want to get involved too.
Well in the confusion of a spate of redundancies and people leaving for pastures new, my team was left depleted with no replacements or direct management. We had to self manage and support ourselves in order to meet requirements.
Loads of people left a critical path team. Nobody replaced them so the natural progression of that was more work for those of us left. Some days barely had time to breathe! Good exposure though and if you can handle the pressure it's enjoyable to see what so few people can achieve
Loads of responsibility. Making bigger decisions and running more tests than some of the graduates. Great fun and good exposure to full-on engineering
Loads learnt and hopefully it'll all stick. Great soft and core skills available from this placement if you're willing to take the responsibility that allows you to develop them
The Company
More than an average number of depressing fridays as many people were facing redundancy but all in all great craic with an upbeat mentality and fun-loving colleagues
Sometimes felt like the placement students were totally forgotten about. The system worked though so can't complain too much
My team invested a lot of time/effort initially to get me up to speed in what is a high load and fast turnaround environment. Once I had the key skills though the rest of it was nearly exclusively individual on-the-job learning. Suited me fine.

The future of the engineering at this site is up in the air at the minute. If it's still here at graduation, I see absolutely no reason why I wouldn't attempt to come back.
The Culture
Great relationship between the students, graduates and even the main body of workforce.
Hatfield is local enough for the placement students to rent student accommodation and bus/bike in to work. Also there's a good student atmosphere which keeps costs down.
Pubs and bars are good in Welwyn. For big nights out it's a short trip to Stevenage or London.
People are keen to have fun.
