Overview
Supporting the sales team on a range of regular tasks and ad-hoc projects was the main aspect of my role. Under the supervision of my line manager, I was tasked with managing product availability reports and distributing them to clients. I would also respond to client queries and worked alongside other company departments involved in deals closed by the sales team. I also supported my line manager with budgeting updates and processes.
Skills
I definitely both learnt new skills and developed existing skills during my time at NBCUniversal. The role developed my time management and organisation skills, as I balanced different pieces of work at the same time. My communication skills also improved, through communicating professionally with both colleagues and customers. The new skills I learnt include those of negotiation, since I was able to experience the negotiation of various deals with a variety of clients.
Responsibilities
After becoming acquainted with my role and receiving the necessary training, I was given more and more responsibility throughout the remainder of my time at NBCUniversal. By the close of my internship, I was comfortable liaising with clients independently and felt confident making material decisions regarding my own pieces of work. I also appreciated being able to make suggestions on the best way to approach a specific task or problem.
Support & Guidance
The guidance I received from my line manager and from my team was exceptional. Whenever I was unsure of something, my line manager was always happy to help, as were my team. They were always willing to answer any and every question I had. I felt well supported by my line manager and team too, and most importantly I knew that this support was genuine and was not limited to work problems only.
Culture
The culture was welcoming and the atmosphere was calm and cooperative. I respected the company for creating a calm and friendly atmosphere in which hard work was expected of you. I felt relaxed at work but at the same time very eager to contribute. NBCUniversal also has a wide range of employee resource groups committed to supporting social and environmental causes, and company leadership shines a spotlight on the most pressing issues and initiatives.
Your Impressions
Considering I completed my internship in the era of the Covid-19 pandemic, meaning I worked from home for the entire duration, I still thoroughly enjoyed my time at NBCUniversal. I found the work engaging and interesting, and appreciated the time spent with my team both at work and outside of work. I felt at home in the company's culture and would definitely consider returning should the opportunity to do so arise.
Yes
I would advise others to carefully choose which internship to apply for by considering which you are best suited to in terms of your skillset and experience. Then ensure you research the media industry and NBCUniversal, especially the department/business function you have applied to, so that you feel comfortable discussing these topics at the interview/assessment centre. Finally, (cliché but) be yourself and make sure you can answer questions about yourself and your experiences.
