Overview
Due to covid I worked partly from home, but still had the opportunity to plan and conduct experiments in the lab. I collaborated with other teams to gather the expertise I required for my personal lab project. I also carried out more routine work including assays commonly used by my team and was taught to use a range of different instruments
Skills
I developed my lab skills including basic pipetting to taking appropriate measures to minimise risk of hazardous substances. I planned experiments from start to finish and gained confidence in presenting my data in team meetings
Responsibilities
I was given more responsibility as time went on, i was able to conduct a specific assay independently after being taught it a few times. I also carried out my own experiments for my project and was involved in the decision making process for planning my experiments
Support & Guidance
My supervisor was highly supportive and willing to answer any questions. We had twice weekly meetings to catch up which were very useful. Scientists in other teams were also willing to help once I reached out to them
Culture
Due to Covid the office and labs were generally quiet and there was a lack of community. I was the only placement student in my building so it was a bit lonely at times. But this is probably just due to covid
Your Impressions
I enjoyed gaining lab experience and learning things I would not have learnt during the limited lab time at university. I gained an insight into working in industry and how the organisation functions. It was good to be able to plan and carry out my own experiments
