Overview
I was responsible for contributing to the accurate and comprehensive completion of risk and regulatory reports – internal and external. The completion of these reports varied from daily, weekly, fortnightly, monthly and quarterly. Within my role, I was given the opportunity to assist our Head Office with a project on outsourcing and third-party risk management. This provided me with valuable communication skills as well as giving me the independence and freedom to approach this project in the way I thought would be most appropriate and beneficial to the business.
Skills
I was able to develop my transferrable skills immensely. For example, time management, organisational skills, email/business communication, and teamwork skills. My research skills were tested when I was given the task of producing a summary on climate change risks based on publications by the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA). This, as well as many other research tasks I was delegated, has greatly improved my analytical and written skills. In my opinion, one of the most valuable skills I gained through doing a placement year was the skills I developed and gained during the interview process.
Responsibilities
During my industrial placement, I was exposed to multiple different areas of the business and conversed with people of all skill and job levels, which was perfect for me as I was able to determine my favoured business area, and which area I could see myself furthering my career in.
Support & Guidance
I used my communication skills to ensure I always contacted or emailed a colleague if I had any questions and thankfully, I had a great team who were extremely helpful and understanding of the situation. They were always willing to help me with any problems, or answer any questions I may have had. I would have regular weekly meetings scheduled with my line manager and team to ensure we were always up-to-date on the weeks tasks.
Culture
The company culture is so positive. Throughout the year, HR organised many events for us to participate in - both intern only events and whole company events.
Your Impressions
I can confidently say the whole experience has exceeded my expectations in all aspects. From the incredibly valuable skills I’ve developed and gained to the wonderful and friendly people I have met across the business, my placement experience has been thoroughly enjoyable.
