Overview
Planning and running lab based process engineering experiments. Summer placement student so also learnt about different areas within the business.
Skills
Planning + Running experiments Presenting findings Team work Roles of engineers in pharmaceutical industry Lab training
Responsibilities
Lots of responsibility. I was given the outline of a project and aims but then was able to take charge of the project. The equipment I used was brand new so I was the expert in this by the time I left. Part of what I had to do was write a user guide for the equipment so my knowledge wasn’t lost after departure.
Support & Guidance
Had a supervisor assigned to me. Weekly meetings with supervisor and team manager. Everyone was very happy to take time out of their day to help with whatever you needed.
Culture
Very friendly atmosphere. Difficult to get a full grasp of this, however, as COVID restrictions were still in place.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed it a lot. It was an area of chemical engineering I never knew existed before so I found it eye opening. The work was flexible as well so you could work from home if you had no lab work to do and get in/leave (within reason) when you liked. This made it a very stress free experience.
Yes
Be prepared for a week of lots of reading through training stuff at the beginning! Ask people for help, they’re always happy to. Ask to see different parts of the business and to shadow people to get the most of it. Don’t be afraid to say if you think you’ve been given too much to do, they just want you to enjoy it.
