Overview
Analyzing business processes and assessing the scope for technology solutions to automate them. Specifically, I would watch the process take place and ask questions to understand it fully, then create a document containing my findings. There was also a team-based challenge for the tech/ops interns to design a new proposal that Barclays could implement, which was then presented to senior leaders in technology.
Skills
Developed analytical skills, teamworking, commercial awareness, and improved networking skills.
Responsibilities
Because the work my desk was doing spanned many years, I did not get the opportunity to take ownership of any of the projects, but I was given a large amount of responsibility for the tasks I was given, meaning they were actual desk work, and not just menial tasks.
Support & Guidance
You are assigned a manager, who is the one who assigns you work, and is responsible for the majority of your development, and on whether you should get a return offer. You are also assigned a graduate mentor, who I found to be a useful resource as well. There is also a dedicated graduate development team who is also available, as well as the support services available to regular employees.
Culture
Generally appeared to be quite good, most people were happy to help interns, although due to the internship being online, it was hard to get a very good idea of it.
Your Impressions
Overall I enjoyed it a lot. The aspect I enjoyed the most was networking with people, and talking to them about what they do, especially those in other divisions.
Yes
Make sure you do research on what all the roles involve, as while it is not impossible to change division, it can sometimes be quite difficult, and depends on a lot of factors, like how many spaces they have in the division and how many other interns want to move there.
