Overview
I started the day with my team's daily call and any relevant meetings. I would then do work on my given project, reaching out to anyone necessary. Throughout the week I'd also have line manager meetings to discuss how my projects were going, as well as how I was getting on in the job. We also had an intern group project outside of my team for which we went to workshops and meetings for, as well as general intern seminars/training sessions throughout the internship.
Skills
I developed commincation and team work skills, having opportunities to do this throughout each day. I learnt to use new programmes/websites as well as put into practice things like microsoft excel. I was given opportunities to give presentations, and given feedback on these. The intern training provided also gave skills and knowledge eg we did a finanical technology set of seminars and seminars about using microsoft products were also available.
Responsibilities
The projects I work on gave me a good balance of responsibility and support. The team were friendly and helpful so this was neither overwheleming nor stressful as I could ask for any help or confirmation that was needed. It was a good experience to have some responsibility and to feel that the work and projects I was doing were actually of use. It was good to make a recgonised contribution to the team's work.
Support & Guidance
Throughout the internship I recieved a lot of support and guidance from a range of people. I had line managers and other team members, all who were there to help with anything we needed. We also were given a "buddy" as an informal form of support where you could ask for help and advice with anything. Furthermore the internship team were on hand and very helpful for anything you need help with or any quesitons.
Culture
This is hard to answer as the whole internship was online, however the general team atmospher was good despite this. The daily calls had a small bit of personal chat, and the team held a weekly non work related call so people did not feel too isolated. The wider company culture seems determined to be inclusive. Again, I feel we couldn't experience all of this due to it being online because of the pandemic.
Your Impressions
Overall I really enjoyed my experience. I had a good balance of work projects and responsibilty without having too much pressure or stress placed on me. I did not enjoy all of the internship activities (the wider intern zooms and seminars) however some were really interesting and useful. I gained some good experience and skills that will definately come in handy in the future. I would definatley reccomened the experience to any students looking for a good internship.
Yes
I joined Barclays during the pandemic and so I did not experience all of the usual in person interviews and tests. I would advise others to know the barclays values. Furthermore you should be able to know how they would be put into practice in the work place and how you personally have shown them in past situations. Know your skills and which skills your role is looking for to justify what you can bring to barclays.
