Overview
ER is analysing publicly traded stocks and giving recommendations and advice to clients (buyside e.g. hedge funds etc) Involved 2 assessed stock pitches and a 15 page 'thematic project' on a new and emerging theme of your choice Also involved sector work, which was mostly around the assessed work and ranged from helping out with Q2 earnings, ESG work, initiations, etc. Working hours were typically 7am - 6pm, although could be longer depending on what work you were doing
Skills
Included a 3-day markets crash course covering fixed income, equities, swaps etc - learnt lots of technical skills Learnt time management skills, valuation skills, pitching skills, accounting skills, writing skills etc Each sector gave a brief training session on what they cover, helpful as it gave a broad picture of what ER is like S&T also put on specific training sessions e.g. electronic trading sessions Lots of networking events, also had a very flat culture and encouraged mentorship, which was especially helpful
Responsibilities
Lots of responsibility was given, interns had the opportunity to contribute to published notes, earnings work, ESG projects that were meaningful etc Was given exposure to senior people within the department e.g. breakfast with head of department or calls with the US leadership team Ideas and opinions of interns were listened to and taken seriously, both in a work and social context Work was very collaborative, especially with senior staff, but also had opportunities to be autonomous
Support & Guidance
Lots of support and guidance from MD/line manager, had regular meetings and calls with them to discuss work and wellbeing, also had input to the assessed projects/pitches mentioned above Lots of support from wider team, a mentor and buddy system was in place which was particularly helpful No formalities, even with MDs and above, so was easy to reach out for feedback or help with problems Very positive attitude towards helping interns and guidance
Culture
Culture was amazing, everyone made time for interns Culture was flat, so would have equal opportunities to interact with MDs, Directors, Associates etc Lots of in-person socials e.g. drinks, sports, dinners etc Plenty of company wide diversity initiatives, very progressive place to work No face-time culture, very much work until the work is done, so could finish earlier and it would not be frowned upon, time was also taken out of the working day to attend various social events
Your Impressions
Really enjoyed it, gained a great picture of the work that a FT analyst would do, as well as the broader financial system The work was very interesting and stimulating, the team were very friendly, the culture was sustainable and friendly Exceeded expectations, no horror stories with working hours or office politics, everything was very fair and somewhat meritocratic, anonymous submissions were used for the assessed project Would return, great place and environment to work in
Yes
Process was: SJT, Video Interview/Numerical tests (job simulation), CV submission, AC Would highly recommend networking and finding as much info about Barclays and the industry as possible e.g. reading Barclay's research insights on their website AC comprised of two interviews, a role play interview where information is presented to you and you have to analyse it and pitch it to a 'client', and a competency based interview with some brain teasers/estimation questions and more technical questions threaded in
