    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • A large portion of the role involves consolidating/comparing data from the LSD sites worldwide. Main month-end tasks include running reports for directors, working with site controllers to ensure data is loaded correctly/on time, forecasting, and adjusting figures as per sector guidance. The rest is largely defined by you, with opportunities to get involved in project work, collaborating with other interns, implementing process improvements, creating reports, and using ERP systems (SAP, Oracle and internal).

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Working in head office means you work with a huge range of people, from site controllers, to the directors, so communication skills are improved quickly. You are also given a lot of responsibility, and work on crucial tasks, such as capital spending budgeting, so self-motivation and the ability to prioritise your work is another focus. Managers are very friendly and are happy to discuss specific targets to tailor the work to achieve these.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Eaton really values early talent, so interns are treated as members of the team, and given real responsibility. There is always the opportunity to get involved in more, and while the tasks you’re given are crucial for the business, you have the support system of your managers, colleagues and other interns, so it’s a fantastic time to challenge yourself and grow your confidence.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • There’s a huge supportive network at Eaton. You work closely with your manager and team members, but there is also an intern programme team, and many other interns across the UK to link up with. Outside of this there are a wide range of inclusion groups, run by employees, that are 100% worth getting involved in! Everyone is so friendly and will make time for you if needed, so you’re never without support.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Eaton values inclusion & diversity so there are plenty of inclusion groups to get involved with. There’s a big focus on being yourself and the management are very much open to learning. Inclusion groups support employees and run sessions and events to both teach and celebrate- they’re a lot of fun and the people are amazing. Even senior management are very approachable and employee views are sought out and highly valued.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed my internship. The role was varied and interesting, there were almost endless opportunities, the people were friendly, the culture was welcoming and inclusive, and I would love to return after graduating. I have developed transferable skills and gained important, real-life experience, while still enjoying going to work every day. My manager was quite flexible, so the internship was well matched to the targets I had set for it.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Eaton
  • Values are big at Eaton, so I would definitely recommend looking into the company values and targets and see if they align with your own. Think about what you want to achieve from a placement year and set some goals. And then don’t be afraid to ask questions- if there are things you know you want to get involved with, then ask!
