    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I was part of the R&D team. Day-to-day tasks included developing & troubleshooting software and hardware solutions and I was fully immersed in the whole business, from change control to research, troubleshooting and even developing hardware and software on my own. I attended daily meetings and weekly pulses regarding progress on development also worked with QA in establishing potential faults and fixes. My role change a little bit later on when I was more focused on the software side, while in the beginning I was more into hardware. This allowed me to explore more areas and it was a good change.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Yes. During my placement, I greatly improved my communication skills by interacting with factories throughout the world. I also learned a new programming language, learned a great bunch about EMI standards, and even carried out tests myself. I also learned how to design PCBs and how to do a presentation properly. It was a really hands-on experience and you could actually see how your work impacts the business, which was a very good thing to see.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes. As with any job, it started a bit slow until you get to know more people and everyone gets to you, this was particularly tough with the Covid-19 pandemic still in place, but despite this I couldn't say that I lacked responsability. After the initial introductions, I was given tasks and jobs that affected real projects and products and this was an important factor of why this placement was a huge factor in my career choice & path.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • As someone with not a lot of experience in the industry or even hardware electronics, I was given a lot of guidance into actually making sure that I feel comfortable. Coming from university it's a whole different environment when you don't have people telling you what to do and assessing you, but rather I met a bunch of helpful and nice people that guided me throughout the year. I have learned a lot about testing equipment and how to use them, a lot about EMI, and a whole bunch more regarding PCBs and layout. I can quote one of my colleagues and say: "There are not stupid questions, just stupid answers".

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from your line manager?
  • 5/5

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?
  • 4/5

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture is good, very open-minded and it seemed to be a very casual level. I also felt like people were treated as equal and there wasn't a single moment that I felt like I was the intern, but instead felt like I was part of a bigger picture and while I might not have known as much as other people, there was always my bit that was as equally important as someone's else. Overall, it felt quite good and the company is trying to make people feel comfortable and even facilitate WFH.

  • How would you rate the inclusiveness of the culture?

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed my placement. I believe it's a huge boost in my career and I learned so much and met a bunch of nice people whom I still keep in touch with. It was a good experience and I wholeheartedly recommend it as I've gained so much knowledge and the number of opportunities and responsibilities that I had really showed me a clear picture of what I want to do with my career.

  • 7. Would you recommend Eaton to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Eaton
  • I always felt that it does not really matter what you know, but what you are willing to give and the amount of time and resources that you are willing to put in, so I guess to make sure you have at least an idea of what you want to do before applying. I would also recommend preparing with STAR questions & answers and I suppose to have fun in the interviewing process and don't stress too hard. No one is there to make you feel bad and the early talent team is quite friendly and nice overall.
