Overview
Working days started at 9am and ended at 5pm. I was in the governance team and had to create a gang chart for a project migration in the loan processing system. This role consisted of a lot of 1 to 1 meetings with workstream leads where they would lay out their set milestones for the entire migration after which I would insert into the Gantt chart.
Skills
-improved organisational skills -learned how to display a project through a Gantt chart -about different leadership styles -learned about Barclays values -learned about the different business areas in Barclays and they all fit together -how to schedule meetings in a very busy environment -the different risks Barclays is exposed to and how to class them. -how to use excel on a higher level -expanded my network
Responsibilities
The project I was working on was very useful for the governance team to see how the different work streams tie together and identify any bottlenecks or areas of concern in any workstream’s milestone layout. As this was a project of importance I have felt like I had a decent amount of responsibility. Furthermore I worked with other interns to update a key document which laid out each employee’S FTE for each of the projects they were working with. This helped them understand how much time to allocate to each project and prevented them from being overworked.
Support & Guidance
My line manager was excellent and provided guidance throughout the internship. I was also paired with other graduates working on the project who helped me every step of the way if I was stuck.
Culture
The company culture was excellent in that their values and mindsets are at the heart of everything they do. There was clear emphasis on promoting their values and mindset throughout that internship which helped me reflect those values in my work. We were also introduced to societies for minorities which held events throughout the year. Unfortunately as the internship was virtual I did not get to participate in any events.
Your Impressions
I have really enjoyed my internship as I’ve met some amazing people and had an excellent connection with my line manager and the interns I’ve worked with. The company culture was really good and it made me have a higher level of admiration for Barclays. Under the current pandemic I can safely say that the internship has met my expectations and I hope to return next year.
Yes
Read more about their values and mindsets as it will be very useful in your interviews. Don’t be afraid to network and chat with other interns or employees as they are all lovely and love to have a chat. Note networking in office should be a lot easier than virtually. Have a set goal of what you want to achieve in the internship from day 1 and always work towards achieving that goal.
