Overview
My role involves variety of tasks such as: Data acquisition, preparation, visualisation and analysis; Software Development & Maintenance; Applying key aspects of Computer Science to solve problems in biological contexts; Daily/Weekly discussions with colleagues; Cross-functional & Cross-departmental presentations;
Skills
I learned an abundance of techniques to capture and visualise Big Data. I have substantially developed my analytical and problem-solving skills in real-world contexts. I also improved my interpersonal skills.
Responsibilities
As I expanded on my skillset, I was progressively being given more responsible tasks over the course of my placement year. My line-manager was very supportive and motivational in those terms. The tasks I was given and performed were meaningful, impactful, appreciated and science/healthcare driven.
Support & Guidance
I received significant support from my line-manager throughout my placement year. He made sure to one-to-one meetings as often as needed to support, but to also drive my confidence and individual problem-solving capabilities. Some colleagues were also very helpful and excited to give more context on work problems. In contrast, I did not find other company sources to be very supportive or instructive. Some company systems were confusing and not explained in a user-friendly manner.
Culture
The company culture was very welcoming, work-inclusive, science-driven and excited. What felt incredible was that even though I was a placement student, everyone treated me as an equal and included me in impactful and meaningful projects.
Your Impressions
My placement year was very fulfilling in a sense that I am confident the work I accomplished will have a positive impact on scientific research on cancer treatment. I could not have hoped for a more meaningful placement year!
Yes
To begin with, I believe a very important step is to understand what YOU find motivating in the position you are applying for, but also to feel confident in YOUR OWN ability to pursue your goals and seek personal development. Both motivation and confidence can be supplemented by good problem-solving skills and knowledge in WIDE RANGE of subject areas related to the position you apply for. In the interviews, keep it interesting & personal.
