Overview
The role is dependent on upcoming build phases, whereby I am required to run build lists and prepare documents, which are discussed in team meetings. You are also required to maintain team documents, as well as developing tools for various functions, such as MS Excel or MS Power BI to aid data analysis.
Skills
I started my placement with a fairly basic understanding of MS Excel, however through project based work, I completed my placement feeling competent with the software. I learnt how to effectively use formulas, develop macros, and how to create dashboards and data visualisations in MS Power Bi.
Responsibilities
My role was critical to the work flow and I had to meet deadlines for distributing documents. I took on additional responsibilities with other departments, and had the opportunity to present topics in high level meetings. This was certainly encouraged, however I had to seek out those opportunities, they were not offered to me.
Support & Guidance
Initially, I had a poor handover, and was not as prepared for the role as I felt I should have been, however the team was very willing to help and bring me up to speed. There was never a moment that I did not receive support.
Culture
As my team’s work accounted for one aspect of the broader work flow, there was certainly an element of completing our work correctly and promptly, otherwise it would affect other departments. The atmosphere was professional but also pleasant. I felt motivated to do my job to the best of my abilities, as a result of the high level performance of my team members and our colleagues.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement. The team was supportive and I enjoyed working with them. Despite COVID circumstances, I was still able to engage with other interns and have online socials with my team. My work felt valued and I had opportunities which aided my personal and professional development.
Yes
Don’t just consider are you right for the company, but also is the company right for you. Be yourself in the interviews and ask questions about work life, social prospects and further opportunities to gauge how suited it is for you.
