Overview
Being a Network and Communications Engineer, most of my time was spent is resolving tickets pertaining to routing, swithching and troubleshooting.
Skills
I had prior experience before joining STFC. I did learn a lot of Microsoft Excel and improved my soft skills rather than technical.
Responsibilities
I was tasked to take on a major role for a new project. I learned a lot from it, although not technical.
Support & Guidance
STFC (or at least Digital Infrastructure department) is an amazing place to work. Everybody, from your boss to senior managers, they are always happy to help in any way they can, especially during ongoing Covid crisis.
Culture
It was a bit relaxed than what I am used to, since I am from south Asia and placement year in my country is more tough and hectic than a regular job, Everyone understood each other and respected diversity. In fact, a lot of work is being done right now to improve company culture and working environment.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed it a lot. I mean, what is not there to enjoy? Some amazing (but confidential) work is carried out at STFC. It is the home of UK's technical prowess, from Nuclear to Space to Quantum to Particle Physics and what not.
Yes
Your CV and cover letter are the most important things. Only putting in what is required in the job description will get you through to the final interview stage.
