Overview
A big part of what i was doing was contributing to an open source project, by writing and reviewing code. I was using parametric modelling to investigate how the choice of appropriate materials and structural form for bridges could make a structure more sustainable. I was peprforming structural calculation for smaller projects of the team.
Skills
I learnt some basic coding in C#, a language I had never used before. I developed my skills in using finite element software programmes and parametric modelling software programmes. I used extensively the Eurocode and British standards, both to identify the appropriate loads for a bridge, but also to perform structural calculations and comply to them.
Responsibilities
I was perfoming calculations by myself following the appropriate standards. I felt like a real engineer. Also, they were trusting me to contribute and alter the code of their open source project. I think generally I was given enough responsibility but not too much to get very stressed about it.
Support & Guidance
I had constant support by my collagues. Despite mainly working from home, I was definetly feeling like everyone was just one one phonecall away. Also, before a new project I always had a call with someone from them team to introduce me to the topic and to make sure I knew what the deliverables were.
Culture
I felt very welcome from day 1. The general atmosphere was very friendly and we also had some team building activities that were really fun. The culture and generally the ethics of the company were aligned with mine and I was proud to work for a company like that one
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my intership and I would definitely consider working again for BuroHappold.
Yes
The main advice would be for them to not be afraid to ask questions. Everyone is very happy to answer them and to help them out in anyway they can. People are busy but are always happy ro stop what they are doing to guide you.
