Overview
The role as a Trainee Structural Engineer involves providing assistance to the team of engineers on a project as well as starting on some tasks/projects individually. Doing calculations and creating structural models on software were common activities.
Skills
I had learnt and also developed existing skills in the duration of the placement. Analytical and design skills as well as time management. I would also emphasise on the further development and utilisation of engineering judgement.
Responsibilities
I would say I was given a fair amount of responsibility, for one project in particular, I was designing foundations (Pile caps) for a stage 4 design which was soon projected to enter the construction phase.
Support & Guidance
The team and supervisors were extremely helpful and supportive, especially in my first few weeks when I was being introduced to the projects and new concepts which I had not covered deeply in University. They were keen on helping me learn as much as possible and gain from the placement.
Culture
Buro Happold tended to project a fairly relaxed atmosphere. People across multiple disciplines would all get along very well and everyone worked at their own pace.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed this internship, I would look forward to going into the office every day, to continue working on the great projects and developing myself so early on in my career. The company and office environment was highly motivating and there were very sociable and friendly colleagues who made it even more enjoyable.
Yes
Embrace your passion, be eager to learn and develop. Don't put yourself under pressure, as long as you enjoy it, you won't struggle.
