Overview
I worked on many projects throughout my placement, using MALTAB and Simulink to design test procedures for models to make sure that they met specific quality and accessibilty standards. I also ran diagnostics on models to make sure that they met already existing criteria. I would then produce reports of my results and tests to provide to my supervisor.
Skills
I have learnt how to program in MATLAB which is a language I had never used before the placement. I improved my proffesional writing skills through my reports and I also improved my presentation skills and communication skills through company provided training.
Responsibilities
For the first half of my placement I was given small project tasks which I would work on alone and produce a report for at the dealine given. In the second half of my placement (after Christmas) I was in charge of designing and creating a suite of test scripts that could be downloaded and run from an internal repositry that would also then upload a copy of the diagnositc report to said repositry.
Support & Guidance
At the start of the placement I was given a month long training session on how to use MATLAB and Simulink which concluded in creating my own Simulink model and producing a report to prove my understanding of the software and the task. There was also an internal training website where you could watch videos that helped you to develop your skills.
Culture
Everyone in the office was professional but also friendly and helpful. There was a lot of groups and commitees that you could join and a lot of support for mental health. Due to COVID there was not as many social events as normal however there were a few department quizzes over Zoom which were quite fun.
Your Impressions
My placement gave me a chance to try some new things like programming and managing my own projects which I really enjoyed. All of my colleagues were friendly and helpful and I enjoyed my time in the department.
Yes
The assessment centre focuses on your strengths rather than you knowledge so make sure that you show them the skills you're good at. Also, don't be afraid to ask them any questions you have.
