Overview
Talking to fellow business partners, gauging outcomes and expectations from previous/future periods regarding financial statements. Conveying that information upwards in a concise and understandable manner to ensure full transparency. This partners with other adhoc jobs which can be unique projects, file refreshes, number investigation etc.
Skills
Definitely. I developed and learn't a number of skills. To list off a few; Power BI, Oracle, TM1 are all softwares i'm now familiar with which I was not before. I have learnt how to investigate, make sense and understand confusing numbers, forecast and analyse and convey that information upwards using only the most important pieces of information. I have also developed skills such as my communication, presenting and excel skills.
Responsibilities
I felt I was given incremental responsibility as time went on, although I did start with a sufficient amount! Things tended to change quite a lot, and responsibilities were shifted around semi-regularly throughout my placement. I was lucky enough to have some responsibilities that were considered important.
Support & Guidance
Considering I was working from home throughout the duration of my placement, I felt very looked after. There were regular meetings (At least weekly) on my progress, my thoughts and feelings etc on a well-being level, and of course I felt as though I could talk to my manager about anything. Also I attended numerous training workshops which thoroughly helped me understand the culture of the company whilst working from home.
Culture
Very friendly. TJX recognise that people make mistakes and it's okay. There were always general chit chats to start off calls and catching up which makes for a nice work environment. You could tell that the people definitely come first.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed it very much. I thought it was a great insight into commercial accounting and finance as a whole, i'm extremely grateful I was able to do my placement in a large company like that, and especially at TJX.
Yes
Be yourself. Honesty is at the very heart of the company culture at TJX and they will recognise that. Go in with an open mind and an eagerness to learn and you will thrive.
