Overview
My role was a Volunteer Mentor at a primary school in North Manchester. I worked with children who came from less advantaged backgrounds to provide academic and emotional support, through supporting in class and holding intervention groups and after school clubs. I acted as a role model for the children.
Skills
I have learnt so many skills - I wanted to develop my initiative and I have done exactly that. I can confidently say I work in a more professional manner, and I have more confidence in my extensive skillset. I feel more organised and self-motivated coming out of this placement year, and I'm much more confident in speaking publicly.
Responsibilities
The school I worked in gave me full responsibility for those I worked with, and trusted me from the beginning. This allowed me to really develop my initiative and take control of my own lesson planning, giving me a real sense of freedom.
Support & Guidance
I received so much support - we were always able to talk to the team about anything, and my Impact Officer was second to none.
Culture
The company culture was so friendly - I felt at home straight away and have come away with amazing friends and contacts. I can still count on City Year for anything even post-placement.
Your Impressions
i absolutely loved every minute of it. It gave me exactly what I was looking for, a chance to develop personally and professionally. I felt so valued within City Year and the school I worked in, and I had so much fun with the team I was working with every day, not to mention my time with the children.
