Overview
Working within a team, providing land agency support to a large oil pipeline operator in the UK. This included assistance with day to day operation of their assets such as planning provisions as well as more specific project support for maintenance and diversions. I was office based but often carried out site visits.
Skills
A large part of my role was stakeholder management, liaising with clients, colleagues, landowners and other third parties. I therefore developed my communication skills massively. I also gained much more commercial awareness. Learning how my client's company operates as well as more about the utilities sector as a whole. This was extremely beneficial when discussing matters with my client.
Responsibilities
After gaining experience working alongside other members of my team, I became responsible for dealing with planning matters relating to my client's assets. I worked alongside my client assessing cases individually before liaising with developers on my client's behalf. I was also given the responsibility of running a few projects for pipeline repair works and a diversion.
Support & Guidance
I received a lot of support towards my RICS qualification during my placement. I was assigned 3 people to assist with my APC diary and summary of experience. I also attended several graduate training days during which we were able to network and carry out exercises. I was also given a lot of support in my day to day role, always feeling I was able to ask for support if required.
Culture
Company culture was excellent, even through cover-19. I felt supported and valued my my team and the company. Several events were organised throughout my placement which were great fun and offered an opportunity for networking.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my placement year and will be returning as a graduate. I felt valued throughout my time there and believe Fisher German will offer exceptional support through the rest of my RICS training. I also really enjoyed the work I undertook during my placement and appreciated the responsibility I was given.
Yes
The interview process was not as scary as some- just relax and be yourself! When you join, be open-minded and willing to learn. Everyone will be supportive so don't be afraid to ask questions.
