Overview
I was a summer analyst for 8 weeks within the investments team and this was followed by a 2 week rotation in a sales and relationship management team. My day to day duties consisted of supporting various people within the business. This was done through working on PowerPoints to refine them, researching different funds, prospecting potential clients, automating business procedures, researching the next generation client and consolidating information related to different funds (why we are invested in them).
Skills
My Excel skills and Python skills improved as I was tasked to automate a business procedure. I also learnt how to effectively network in the professional world, building my confidence and finance knowledge whilst doing so. In addition to this, I had the opportunity to practise my presenting skills, researching skills and ability to convey information in a clear and concise manner. As I participated in several group related tasks too (group intern project and projects working with different full time employees), I also got to build upon my teamwork skills.
Responsibilities
Lots of exposure given during internship. Had the opportunity to work on tasks which would actually be implemented within the business - automation work. In addition to this, some of the PowerPoints which I had the responsibility to refine were actually presented to clients. My group intern project relating to the next generation client helped to inform full time employees' views of how the business should adapt to fulfil the needs of the next generation client too.
Support & Guidance
Plenty of support given during internship. Was assigned two buddies, both of whom met up regularly with me. In addition to this, plenty of senior employees as well as junior employees were happy to attend networking meetings which I had arranged with them. I felt supported at all times whilst doing tasks (regular catch up calls with those that had assigned the task, they'd put me in touch with people that could help me, give me guidance on how to go about doing it etc).
Culture
Great culture and atmosphere. Met loads of people during the internship (they were all happy to meet) and all shared genuine advice and were open to all my questions. Despite the internship being virtual, I felt supported at all times and felt comfortable at work, whilst also being stimulated by the tasks that I was given. Culture of the firm is genuinely great as I needed some time off during the internship for medical reasons and was not only granted this, but employees also checked up on me to make sure I was okay too.
Your Impressions
I very much enjoyed my internship as I learnt a lot during it and met some great people whilst doing it too. I felt supported whilst doing work, whilst also challenged in a way that was stimulating, but not overwhelming. I was given a level of responsibility which I enjoyed and am extremely happy I had the opportunity to work with RBC over the summer. Having done the internship, I leave with a better set of soft and hard skills as well as a much more expansive network.
Yes
When applying, make sure to research the different divisions well in order to find out which division suits your interests and skills. After doing this, find ways that enable you to convey this information to interviewers. Also, use LinkedIn to network with people from the firm as they are able to give you direct insight into the firm's culture and the type of work that goes on in each division. This will help make your application much stronger as your answers of why you want to work at RBC and why that specific division will have much more conviction.
