Overview
First thing was joining the Audit room call in the morning. This is a call which people stay on with microphones and cameras turned off, and is used when we have questions. Generally, the assistant manager is always available on this which is extremely useful. In the first week, I was assigned tasks every morning, however in the second week where I was more familiar, I would continue some of the longer tasks (such as financial statement tie-throughs) from the past few days. Every week, there would also be networking sessions with other interns, alongside socials to attend after work.
Skills
Most notably, I developed my Excel skills with the help of the audit team. However, I also became very familiar working with of EMS and Deloitte Technical Library, which came quite intuitively due to the frequency at which you rely on them. Aside from the hard skills, I also developed my skills in communicating with clients through email exchanges. Time management was also key since you often had many tasks to do at once, so your prioritization skills were tested.
Business Insight
Due to the frequent networking sessions and friendliness of all members of the team, it was very easy to reach out to senior managers (and even partners) to ask any questions about Deloitte and the job in general. Everybody was very patient and friendly, so it was a very comfortable environment to learn about the business for someone who did not come from an accounting background.
Culture
Overall, the culture was fantastic. From the first day of the insight programme, all interns were in touch with each other and there were plenty of socials to get to know each other in an informal setting. All members of the team were always extremely friendly and available for questions, which developed a very comfortable learning environment. I was even able to set up a phone call with a partner, who was available very shortly after we organized it!
Your Impressions
I loved the time at which I worked with Deloitte. Having not come from an accounting background, I felt as if the learning environment that Deloitte fostered has helped me a lot. Although the work was quite challenging at times, it was motivating to see a gradual improvement in the time taken per task and familiarity with the software. The team was my favourite part of the insight. I felt supported throughout the entire thing, and was comfortable with everybody since my first day due to the open company culture and friendliness of the senior managers.
Yes
I would recommend familiarizing yourself with the values that Deloitte holds and reflect on how they are important to you. Being able to communicate this in an interview is super valuable. Also, Deloitte rewards those who are enthusiastic to learn. By showing curiosity, not being afraid to ask questions, and understanding the significance of your work, the internship will be infinitely more insightful. Although the insight was well structured, you could very easily go beyond the pre-organized networking sessions by reaching out to different people for quick calls. This is quite easy when you talk to your team, since they may refer you to people that may be interesting to talk to!
