Overview
I mainly did job shadowing - so I would spend a day or half a day ‘shadowing’ someone. So I was sent all their zoom meetings and I would observe them. I would then have a chat with the person I was shadowing where I could ask them any questions. I also did various training sessions and we also had a few q and a sessions.
Skills
Time management was very important. We also had to give a presentation - so skills around public speaking. I also spent a lot of time trying to get to know people, so communication was very important to gain the most from the internships. I also did some tasks on excel - so it improved my computer skills as well.
Responsibilities
I was. I was given a big excel task to do which allowed me to have a go at doing actual work myself. I also had to prepare a presentation - which meant I had quite a lot to do. I was also asked to read documents for people and even had a go at writing a report myself - but with lots of guidance and help.
Support & Guidance
I honestly had the most amazing support and guidance. Everyone who I spoke to offered to help me and guide me through anything. It was so easy to ask questions and I never felt embarrassed to say I couldn’t do something. I also had a buddy who was amazing and I could very easily ask him for help with everything.
Culture
They had a very friendly company culture - everyone would say hello to one another and everyone seemed to support one another. There weren’t any noticeable hierarchies - everyone was treated as an equal. I also managed to go to a couple of socials and they were a lot of fun - again there were no hierarchies - everyone attended.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my internship. I got such an amazing insight into the department and I learnt the most enormous amount. I have even become friends with some of them - and can’t wait to work with them. There was a real effort made to make sure we had really full and enjoyable weeks. I shadowed everyone from analysts to partners and gained such an appreciation for what deloitte do.
Yes
Be honest and yourself. I think you only end up in the right department if you have been yourself and shown your actual skills. Be proactive - they schedule you in for lots, but what have me a lot of insight was actively asking to look at work they’ve done in the past, asking to talk to people, asking to be kept in the loop about current business deals etc.
