Overview
I write code to implement solutions for providing virtual courses and workshops for students around the world. I write a lot of python and bash scripting to control AWS. I work largely autonomously. My mentor is there if I need help, but he's busy so I trouble him only when i have exhausted all other avenues.
Skills
Developed existing skills in bash and python, learnt ansible from scratch. I'd never used AWS but had got the gist. I learnt a lot more about Linux that I didn't already know. So mainly built on pre-existing knowledge.
Responsibilities
Depends what you consider responsibility. A badly placed command could crash a large number of servers or wipe out AWS instances, volumes and snapshots, causing mass devastation and panic, taking weeks or maybe months to fix. So yes, I guess that's responsibility.
Support & Guidance
Help is always there if I need it.
Culture
Everyone is kind and nice. People appear to be hired based on their merit and humility. No-one is arrogant or mean. They've chosen the people really well.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed it for the most part. It's had its ups and downs but have settled in well and like it just the way it is.
Yes
Every department is different but overall RAL is a decent place to work, full of enthusiastic mostly younger people. You can learn a lot, the campus is lovely and has good food, and a good community.
