    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • The scheme was very well organised, and everyone was super friendly and helpful. We were trusted to do real work and even meet with CMS clients. My favourite part was taking part in a high tech virtual stakeholder management exercise, where the team had created a video game style scenario for us and we had to work as a team to overcome problems. I loved how team oriented the first week was, and how well I got to know my fellow participants.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I definitely improved my commercial awareness, teamwork skills and public speaking ability. I also got to interact with clients for the first time, which required me to tailor my presentation style to a non legal audience. The scheme also really encouraged us to be innovative, so I developed my creative thinking and problem solving ability during the various challenges. These included discussing the potential issues arising from the purchase of a football team, and designing an event to fundraise for Alzheimers Research UK.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • We had presentations from representatives of almost every key CMS practice area, as well as from clients, HR, and the Diversity and Inclusion team. These were invaluable as an introduction to the business. We also had small group conversations with trainees, which were a great way to have our questions answered in an informal setting. I learned a lot about the day to day work a trainee does, which helped me in my decision to accept my offer.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Even the Managing Partner made time to speak with us. We felt truly valued, and like the firm genuinely cares about teaching us new skills to help us during our legal careers. Everyone was super friendly, and we were always made to feel welcome. It was made clear to us that support was always available. A nice touch was the daily yoga and wellbeing sessions, which highlighted CMS's commitment to workplace welfare and work life balance.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I had a great time, especially during the first week which was more hands on. The hours were very reasonable, and while the work was intense, I never really had tasks left to do after we finished at 5pm. This was very different to other Vacation Schemes I had done, and meant o was significantly less stressed. Being placed in teams helped me make friends with my fellow participants, many of whom I have stayed in touch with. I liked the fact that all candidates were on the same scheme, as it reaffirmed the 'one firm' approach despite their large number of offices.

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to CMS
  • Tailor your application. Firms will know if you're just copy and pasting blanket statements on application forms. If you can't think of reasons you're attracted to CMS specifically, then maybe it's not the right firm for you. Don't be afraid to be yourself and highlight unique experience or hobbies you have. I was told that my part time catering work demonstrated valuable skills. In the assessment centres, make sure you contribute in the team exercises but also make sure everyone gets the chance to speak.
