The Role
I enjoyed my placement and learnt a variety of new skills.
I was the only intern in the marketing department but I still felt valued. Made the effort to get to know most interns and full-time employees from other departments.
Support and construstive criticism were provided as and when required but sometimes needed more guidance on how to tackle the technical things.
Not that busy compared to my colleagues but I managed my own workload and completed tasks on time. I also had the chance to work from home and was kept busy.
Responsible for optimising company websites and improving ranking on search engines for selected keywords. A lot of my role involved stuff 'behind the scenes' so in a way, I was partially responsible for keeping sales employees busy!
Enhanced my written communication, time management and organisational skills - all relevant for my degree. I also learnt about SEO, Google PPC and search analytics tools which were all areas completely new to me but is something I may consider as a future career.
The Company
General friendly and informal atmosphere. Most of the time you could have a joke and a laugh and still get your work done.
Accomodation/bills/travel is taken care of so that part of the placement was set up well.
No formal training for my job role. I was disappointed with the lack of initial training, however some training and learning took place on the job. It was a steep learning curve but eventually got the gist of it.
Company Parties/Events
Working from home
Hard to say really because the marketing department is small and my placement was cut short so it depends on whether the company wants more SEO work done.
The Culture
Good social scene amongst interns.
Cost of living was ok. Wages were generally enough to get by on.
Good nightlife in Reading.
Got involved in badminton which was paid for by the company and enjoyed it but it got cancelled after a while.
