Overview
The first two weeks consisted of several training sessions, including financial modeling, accounting, Bloomberg, CapIQ, PowerPoint, and Excel. This was followed by a 3-day job simulation before we joined our respective teams. Once we were allocated to a team, we were staffed on at least 1 deal/ company pitch. The team gave us a lot of exposure and responsibility and was always there to lend a helping hand if need be.
Skills
I could see a drastic increase in my capabilities with Excel and PowerPoint by the end of the internship. My knowledge of both the banking industry and the sector that I was allocated to improve due to the level of exposure I received during my time with the company. The inclusive culture allowed us to improve our teamwork capabilities as I always felt like a valuable team member in all situations.
Responsibilities
The moment I joined the team, everyone welcomed me and encouraged me to ask for help if need be. Within a week of joining the team, I saw some financial analysis that I conducted presented to the wider team. Furthermore, I was staffed on three different transactions and one company pitch during my summer internship. The level of exposure along with great mentorship was extremely valuable as I got a proper insight into the industry.
Support & Guidance
The level of support and guidance received during the internship exceeded my expectations. Employees are always willing to help and show us the most efficient ways to get work done. All of the people in my team, as well as bankers near me, were happy to help and enjoyed sharing their knowledge of the industry/sector. We were given a lot of independent work, but help was always there if we needed it.
Culture
RBC is known to have a great culture, and this was evident during my time with the company. Everyone was extremely welcoming and always had time for a conversation, work-related or not. The full-time employees, as well as interns, always remained positive and energetic, even when faced with tight deadlines. I have formed meaningful relationships during my time with the company and have stayed in touch after the commencement of my internship.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the company. The internship exceeded my expectations and allowed me to get a proper insight into the industry due to the level of exposure I got. I formed valuable connections and friendships with a diverse group of people, and I look forward to seeing these individuals soon. RBC was very welcoming and arranged several team drinks and a farewell dinner to thank us for our time with the company.
Yes
I would advise others to first research the company and the industry to see if it would be a good fit for the individual. I would highly recommend following RBC in the news and to follow their LinkedIn page to stay up to date with RBC's latest activities and achievements. Furthermore, I would recommend that others reach out to current employees and former interns to ask about their experiences and best preparation methods for the application process.
