Overview
In my role, I was given charge of several potential clients to prospect and qualify for deals. I also conducted extensive market research into specific retailers and industries to identify potential targets for our pipeline. I worked on a side project within the product team, where we worked on business sales strategy. I also developed an analytics tracker to provide management insight into the team. There were many intern activities as well.
Skills
My Excel and Powerpoint (MS Office in general) skills really improved during my time at Visa. I learned how to formally qualify companies for deals and what is involved in the prospecting process.
Responsibilities
Yes. I was put completely in charge of 5 prospects during my time at Visa. This included managing all communications, leading the meetings to conduct prospecting, completing qualification checklists, presenting the prospect at meetings, etc.
Support & Guidance
The Next Gen Team went above and beyond to offer training sessions to all interns. These were largely focused around different aspects of Visa and how the business works, which was incredibly useful in understanding the significance of your team and how the business runs. Within the BD team, everyone was more than willing to help me if I needed any support, and they were all keen to guide me through processes when necessary.
Culture
Everyone at Visa loves their job, and is incredibly good at it. I've never gotten the impression that someone does NOT want to be there. Visa has liberation groups for marginalised populations which support employees and allies & host loads of events. Pride month was a huge deal which I loved! There is a huge emphasis on volunteerism and most importantly social impact and sustainability.
Your Impressions
I could not have asked for a better placement. My team was incredibly supportive and encouraging, and the work I was given was truly meaningful and hands on. I didn't feel like a waste of time. The company culture is inviting and progressive, which was a shock (in a good way). I never imagined that such a large company could have such a positive impact, and I would work there forever!
Yes
Be yourself! Visa does not want cookie-cutter, pristine people with no personality. They embrace individuality, they want you to make them laugh, they want to see that you will fit their culture. Research the payments industry beforehand so you know what Visa does and how they make money. Research your business function so you know what the team does. Be professional, but not emotionless!
