Overview
We had daily stand-ups to give updates on the task each team member was working on. We also had retrospective sessions once every two weeks to evaluate how the team worked.
Skills
The team used various different technologies and there were opportunities for me to try out whichever technologies I was interested in using and learning more about. We had a lot of knowledge share sessions to learn about new tools.
Responsibilities
After having gained familiarity with how the team functioned and the tech stack used, I was given a project to work on from scratch where I was able to design the new system and decide on the technologies and languages I would like to use to implement it.
Support & Guidance
I was assigned a placement mentor who was also available to answer any questions I had during my placement year. All of the team members were also very willing to jump on a quick call to explain things to me if I had questions.
Culture
Everyone was very friendly and we were encouraged to get involved in other things that the company had to offer outside of our work such as volunteering, socials and conferences etc.
Your Impressions
Despite having to work from home for the majority of the placement year, I still thoroughly enjoy my time at Expedia Group. I felt that I was given tasks that were worthwhile and also opportunities to expand my knowledge and skills.
Yes
Make sure that you know what you have put on your CV and that you are able to talk about everything you have mentioned on there. Brush up your basic programming skills using Hackerrank, Leetcode etc.
