    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • The role involves working on various projects for clients in the energy sector. This could be developing high level conceptual designs of MV/HV substations or designing efficient solutions that enable the integration of renewable energy sources into power grids . This typically entails interacting with multi-disciplinary teams across the group, clients, senior electrical engineers or equipment manufacturers.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • During the course of my placement year, I have gained a lot of technical knowledge in substation design, battery energy storage electric vehicles, and green hydrogen. I have also had the opportunity to attend webinars on various topics concerning the energy transition, including smart cities, sustainable transport, climate resilience and buildings and infrastructure. In addition, I was also able to develop and improve soft skills such team working, time management, organisation, presentation, problem solving etc.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility early on. From the second week, I was put on a big innovative project to develop high level substation conceptual designs for a client. I had the opportunity to attend meetings with the client and prepare technical documents for presentation. Overall, I was given responsibilities and autonomy during various projects

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I was assigned a buddy during the first month of my placement year to help me settle into the team and organisation. My buddy and line manager were responsible for providing guidance and support on any queries I had during my transition phase. Other team members were also have helpful and welcoming. They were always ready to set time aside to explain concepts and provide advice. The company also provides wellbeing support if you have any problems.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture is great. Everyone is inclusive and always prepared to help when needed. The company also organises well-being sessions, social events and networking events. Pre Covid-19, sport events, charity and voluntarily initiatives were also frequently organised as well.

  • I would rate my placement year at Mott MacDonald 9/10. I have been able to achieve most of the career goals I set out before the placement.
