Overview
Daily morning standup. Worked in a team alongside four other interns, attempting to address a variety of tasks that had been assigned to us, most of which were related to Cloud Technologies in some way. As a team, we gave weekly presentations to fellow interns and more senior staff members which summarised the progress we had made on our tasks. Tasks were both technical and business-focussed.
Skills
Good opportunities to improve skills in a number of key technologies, including languages such as Python and Java, as well as extensive use of Google Cloud Platform functionalities and SQL. Structure of the internship also gave many oppoortunities to improve general business and soft skills through delivering presentations and maintaining communication with internal clients to gauge task requirements. Access to many additional online training opportunities throughout the internship.
Responsibilities
Yes, you and your intern team were responsible for driving your tasks to completion and ensuring that they delivered on the anticipated outcomes, though ample support was available if you needed it.
Support & Guidance
There was a good amount of support from supervisors to address technical queries that we had and to provide feedback on our presentation design and delivery. Graduate buddy system provided an opportunity for informal discussion with a participant in the grad scheme to discuss professional development, how you thought things were going etc.
Culture
Very nice company culture overall. Strong emphasis on encouraging you to develop and be your best self. No excessive working hours. Encouraged strongly to take a volunteering day to help a local community effort of your choice. Also encouraged to work in a separate team of interdisciplinary interns from across the bank to raise money for charity (GROW challenge).
Your Impressions
Very enjoyable 8 weeks. Learned a lot from the supervisors, fellow interns, and representatives from different areas of HSBC Technology. Very supportive atmosphere where you are encouraged to learn and achieve.
Yes
Focus on showing your passion for technology and think about ways in which it can help enhance the service that a leading international bank provides to its clients. Research some of HSBC's recent technology and sustainability initiatives. Be yourself.
