The Role
I really enjoyed working at Disney. The skills I have learnt this year are invaluable, the most important thing I have gained thi syear is my confidence. I now have a greater confidence in myself and I believe this new found confidence will help me to achieve highly in my last year at uni and ultimately help me get a good graduate job. The best part of Disney is the people, you couldn't ask to work with better people.
I always felt I was a valued member of my team. I was given specific tasks and they allowed me to own them and coordinate tasks to do with them, making me feel responsible and like I was doing something worthwhile. I didn't feel like an intern I felt like a proper member of the team.
I have recieved a massive amount of support from my managers, we held regular meetings and within these meetings discussed my faults and strengths. This really helped me to identify what I ultimately needed to work on. I then discussed this further with my manager and in turn we decided how I could improve. For example, I found out my presentation skills were weak so my manager always pushed me to do presentations at every oportunity and now I feel like my presentation skills have improved greatly.
My work at Disney was very cyclical as I worked in the finance sector. This meant I was busy at the close and open on every quarter but less busy in the middle. I was never bored and could always ask for more work.
I was given a fair amount of respobsibility and asked to maintain several financial reports that all markets used for their financial analysis. This really helped with my attention to detail as I knew if the reports had errors it could be a major mistake. Every piece of work I did I had to run by my manager.
The main thing I can take from this placement is the experience of a real job in the sector I want to be in. I now have a greater understanding of a profit and loss account and how it affects the real world. I can use this knowledge when returning to my studies.
The Company
My team was sociable but knew when they needed to be serious which I think is the perfect balance. It was good that I could chat to my managers as friends and not like they were judging me.
Disney are experts in placements, they have so many students every year and know how to treat us. There's a good social element and a great support element from your teams.
Disney didn't offer my much training except for the use of one system but they do hold monthly talks from high up members of the company. So it depends what you make of it.
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
It depends on if there are job roles available. They won't necessarily create a role for you but if there's one available they will always prefer someone who'd worked here before.
The Culture
Disney every year organises a social comittee of four interns. These interns organise ice breakers and social activities. It's great to meet everyone.
The placement is in London so everything is quite expensive but so worth it. I would recommend living in London to anyone!
It's London so it's amazing! Hammersmith itself is only a few bars but the centre is a short tube ride away.
Disney has a netball and football team and someone teaches yoga once a week. The yoga is really good and I would definately recommend it.
