Overview
The insight was a 5 day programme, with an interview day (assessment centre) on the last day. On a day-to-day basis, we had interactive sessions with speakers from the bank who would come in and talk about the different roles within the banking industry, a finance topic or a case study. On day 2 and day 3, we were split according to our indicated preference of divisions, allowing for more in dept knowledge and insight into the specific division that we were interested in. At the end of some days, we would also have networking events with representatives from the firm.
Skills
I have definetely learnt new technical skills at the Spring Week. Through being introduced to the different divisions and enquiring about what different divisions do, I was able to learn a lot of new technical knowledge about the banking industry that I previously did not have. A great example would be learning about financing options for LBOs and what credit analysis ratios needed to be prioritised and considered in this case. Throughout the spring week, I was able to develop my interpersonal and teamwork skills as we often had group activities. Networking and getting to know other people within my cohort also contributed to this.
Business Insight
It was extremely helpful in deciding which specific role is suited for me. It gave me a snapshot into what different roles had to offer and gave me a better understanding of where I can best offer my skillset. Moreover, it also gave an overview of how different roles within the bank interact, allowing for a better understanding of the nature of the job, the teams we will likely be working closely with and just in general, the day-to-day tasks of the job.
Culture
There were sessions within the spring week that covered what it was like working at the bank. I generally felt that the company culture and atmosphere was extremely welcoming, with different employee support systems, such as LEAD for women or IGEN. We were introduce to the different communities within the bank since the very first day and that gave massive insight into the support system and culture that is unique to Bank of America. Moreover, a lot of the bankers that I have spoken to were very welcoming and provided very honest and insightful answers.
Your Impressions
I absolutely enjoyed my spring insight. I really have no complaints and cannot thank the HR team enough for putting together such a wonderful and insightful experience. It was clear that a lot of time and resource was invested into crafting out the insight week carefully. I got to meet many incredible people during the insight week, both from the Bank and also people within my cohort that I will always stay in touch with. The knowledge that I have gained through this experience has also been invaluable.
Yes
Have a good industry of what the banking industry does and the working culture within the firm. Reach out to seniors who might be doing a summer internship at Bank of America to get a better understand of what the culture is like. Researching by looking through Bank of America's Website and Linkedin Job Descriptions of existing employees would also be of great help. Lastly, know your strengths and where you can value add for the firm.
