    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • We were given insights into Nomura's Investment Banking, Global Markets, and Technology divisions. The insight was in-person, and it consisted of talks by senior members of staff, such as Executive Directors and Managing Directors, who spoke to us about different divisions. We also gained realistic experiences of how it is to work at Nomura, such as through a trading game, giving a series of two-minute stock pitches to members of staff, and learning about an M&A case study.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During my time at Nomura, I developed my existing soft skills through a Networking and Teamwork workshop organized by Development Beyond Learning. This helped me harness my people skills and how cooperating in a team can be made easier through allocating roles. I also learned analytical skills, in which I have never properly been able to engage with content to do with trading or M&A case studies. This enabled me to become more thoughtful and analytical.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • It was extremely insightful. Nomura offered so many networking opportunities, such as at lunchtimes and during the Speed Networking sessions, and the employees were all incredibly insightful and explained the inner dealings of their work very well. Their insights benefitted me to the point that I found that some divisions appeared better-suited to me than others, and enabled me to find my true passions within an investment bank. Nomura could not have done this better.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture was amazing. Every single employee I spoke to mentioned than unlike other large investment banks, Nomura was very people-oriented, and had a flat, more open hierarchy. The general atmosphere seemed very optimistic, and people definitely appeared to enjoy working at Nomura. I feel that following my insight opportunity, I would definitely be open to working there, as the culture appears more optimistic and open-minded than with other large banks, where it may have a more intimidating culture.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I loved the insight. Everyone there was so happy to help, and the employees all looked happy to be there and answered all of my questions very well. The recruitment team, Olivia and Bonita, treated us especially well, with food being prepared for us every morning and lunch, and their organising so many networking opportunities was truly beneficial for my learning. I wouldn't have wanted to do an insight anywhere else, as Nomura definitely showed they cared for us.

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Nomura
  • In applying to Nomura, I would recommend to others that they should prepare well. Regarding tests, there are lots of free resources online, therefore I urge you to practise these so as not to risk falling at the first hurdle. With regards to the interview, make sure to research Nomura's company values, and to highlight what you have done that shows you align with these values. Going the extra mile always makes a difference.
