Overview
I sat in Commercial Litigation in week 1, and Real Estate and Projects in week 2. I attended various talks and workshops about the different practice areas. I had a supervisor who was an associate and they set me work to do which were typical of a trainee at the firm. This involved legal research and drafting. The assessment day for the training contract was half a day in the second week.
Skills
I developed my attention to detail by reviewing contracts and spotting mistakes. I developed my teamwork skills by working in a team and dealing with different people in the different practice areas. Moreover, I developed my legal research skills by researching areas of the law that were entirely new to me. I also developed my communication skills by speaking up when I needed something clarifying. The firm were more than happy to help.
Business Insight
I really enjoyed learning about the firm and its role as a business. I learnt about the firms strategies and management going forward, and how it aims to grow rapidly whilst also keeping its friendly culture. I was exposed to the different practice areas and so quickly found that there were areas I had not experienced before.
Culture
I was told that the firm was friendly, however, I was not aware of how friendly they really were until I walked in the door. I fit in very well and everyone was very welcoming. It really is a big firm with a small feel. I was invited to a lunch for a senior associates who was leaving and made to feel like I was part of the team straight-away.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed the insight event. I learnt about the firm, its culture, the type of work it does, and the opportunities that are available. The insight confirmed that this is a place I would love to work in.
Yes
Be yourself. The firm is looking for people who would fit in there, just as much as you are looking to see whether you fit in at that firm. Be confident when asking questions. These questions could help both you and others around you.
