Overview
The insight event was a three day Virtual Insight into Technology roles at Amazon with particular focus on Software Engineering opportunities and roles. The day to day tasks consisted of interactive coding sessions and workshops, which were organised in small groups , as well as many panel and question and answer talks from current Amazon employees. We were also given a deeper insight into how to achieve a future internship or graduate role from lead recruiters themselves.
Skills
This insight event has definitely improved my coding skills. We were given problems to work on through virtual coding platforms, and I found this hands on experience to be particularly beneficial in helping me learn. I also learnt much more about different data structures used and the testing methods, which were new to me. It also helped to gain an insight into the soft skills that are beneficial and how to develop these, so I was able to develop my technical and non-technical skills.
Business Insight
I found it very insightful to learn about the business and all its potential roles. I was particularly fascinated when learning about the various teams and division Amazon has and how roles vary within these. The interactive quiz also allowed us to gain a deeper understanding of the history of Amazon. Also, there was a strong focus on the principles of Amazon, which really helped in understanding the company’s focus as well as goals and vision.
Culture
I found the company culture to be very friendly. They were very encouraging when participating and trying to get us involved for example by asking many questions. The hosts of the event and mentors showed they were really focused on guiding us to further success. We also had a talk on Amazon’s affinity groups and employee networks, which was very insightful into the inclusive and supportive culture of the company. It also showcased different opportunities aside from the roles.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed this insight event. U definitely particularly liked working on the various coding problems, which were done in small groups with a mentor, who was an Amazon employee. I also thought it was very well structured for example it included a variety of helpful sessions and workshops, designed to give us the best advice and insights. I think I would have much preferred an in person event, however I understand the circumstances are not very permitting.
Yes
My advice to applicants would be to take the time to understand the company before applying and what they stand for. They look for like minded people who will suit their core values and principles. During the insight, I would strongly advise them to utilise all the opportunities that the programme gives to participate and get involved. For example, by asking questions to different panellists, engaging in the small groups or participating in the online quizzes.
