    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • On a day-to-day basis we were told about Amazon in general and specifically about the recruitment process for software engineer interns. In the morning normally we would hear from workers at Amazon that told us about their fields of expertise, tips related to applying, a working day at Amazon... In the afternoons we would meet with our mentor and exercise coding in small groups. He would explain us the concepts we struggled with and helped us improving our existing skills.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my coding and problem solving skills as well as my oral communication. I really enjoyed solving algorithmic relevant problems. New skills I learnt are mainly different programming languages I was not used to, such as Python and Java. I have found the afternoon technical workshops really useful for putting into practise the theory we learn at university. Also I gained collaboration skills when working together in small groups to solve a problem.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • It was surprising and exciting. I kind of expected from a big enterprise such as Amazon to have a wide variety of potential roles available but I certainly wasn't expecting such an offer. What surprised me the most about the business were it's leadership principles and how often they come up in the life of Amazon workers. I didn't expect the customer to be such a central figure in the enterprise objectives.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • It was very friendly and welcoming. I felt very included and listened to. I personally had a lot of questions and I have no complaint to speak of because every single one of them was attended to and promptly and meaningfully answered. I personally was a bit nervous about the experience because I didn't think I would fit but I felt at easy immediately, especially in the technical workshop spaces where the relationship with everyone was really great.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I really enjoyed it, it fulfilled all my expectations and gave me tools to continue with my application process at Amazon. It really was everything you could expect from an insights experience: gave me the material and the confidence to apply with possibilities at Amazon. What I really value is that it gave me all the knowledge that I would want to know before applying to really know if it is an option that fits me or not.

  • 7. Would you recommend Amazon to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Amazon
  • I would advise them to look at the leadership principles and to dust off their coding skills because they'll knowledge of both things in their applying process. Specifically they should study graphs, sorting, APIs... I think they could also read a bit about Amazon to really know whether they would fit into the enterprise as a worker. Finally I would advise them to be calm during the interview and to ask as many questions as they need because I saw the interviewers are very friendly and won't mind at all.
