Overview
The insight was to provide an overview of the bank. This was predominantly listening to current employees talk about their experiences. Day 1 was an overview of the Bank culture and practices. Day 2 was an insight into Global Banking Day 3 involved an overview of Global Markets Day 4 was about the other areas, including operations and Group Functions.
Skills
There was a Fitch Learning Session which covered the basics of Investment Banking. We also had some employees cover a detailed overview of their day. Any skills learnt were passive and not actively applied since the sessions were only interactive in the form of a Q&A at the end.
Business Insight
I think this was well covered since we were given both a detailed overview of the division by a senior employee as well as an overview of the day-to-day work of a graduate to understand what each role would be at both ends of the corporate ladder. All available roles were covered and everyone was able to get an insight into the area they were most interested in.
Culture
The understanding of the culture was limited since the experience was virtual. However, the staff made an effort to be approachable and amicable, willing to answer questions after their session had concluded.
Your Impressions
The lack of interactivity, partly due to the virtual nature of the program, impeded its ability to be thoroughly engaging. Given that the range of activities involved listening and asking questions inclusively, there was not much scope to apply knowledge learnt. That being said, the sessions that were organised were well-thought-out and informative. UBS tried to do the best with what they had and maintained a friendly environment throughout.
Yes
Consider if a general spring insight is most useful to you. Do you know where you want to work specifically or are you still exploring? The latter would make this insight week incredibly useful. If you are certain of what you want to do, only do this Spring Week if UBS is somewhere you would like to work given the benefits in summer applications. The knowledge developed in the program is limited.
