    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • The workshop consisted of talks about different practice areas of the firm, presentations about the firm's pro bono culture, two case studies detailing some interesting matters that HSF has worked on in the past, and alternative dispute resolution session and shadowing a trainee in their day-to-day tasks and plenty of networking opportunities.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Negotiation skills while participating in a mediation simulation, attention to detail when proofreading documents that the trainee had written, communication skills generally from the whole workshop, as well as some technical knowledge gained about the firm's corporate practice and dispute resolution from the case study workshops.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • It was insightful; although I had entered the firm being pretty clear about the potential role available to me, the aspect of shadowing the trainee gave me a good understanding of specifically what the role entails. The sessions on pro bono, practice areas and case studies gave me a better understanding of HSF as a business.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I enjoyed it so much - it was interactive and struck the right balance between learning about the firm from presentations and personally getting to know the firm by networking. Moreover, the networking opportunities - such as mini golf and lunches were a great chance to talk to my peers and meet people on similar paths as me. I came away from the workshop with more knowledge about commercial law, more knowledge about HSF, confidence about my chosen career path and more friends to keep in touch with.

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Herbert Smith Freehills
  • Make sure to attend HSF's online events about applications - to me, they were really useful in outlining exactly the structure and content of what HSF is looking for.
