Overview
My role consisted of helping people within the business with the purchase-to-pay process (the process we go through from when we order goods/services from a vendor to when they actually get paid), amongst other tasks to ensure we keep a good relationship with vendors and help other parts of the business run smoothly. Day to day I completed similar tasks, but there was always new things to tackle.
Skills
I have learned many skills throughout this placement as well as developed ones I already had. I learned how to communicate with vendors professionally, how to use core accounting systems like SAP and Excel, how to train other users on how to complete key processes, and more. There is plenty of opportunities to learn more about Finance as a whole, as well as develop your own personal skills to develop your character.
Responsibilities
My managers gave me lots of responsibilities from the start of the internship, but also were there to provide support if I needed it. There was always opportunity to ask for more responsibility or different tasks if I would like it as well. Over time, I became more independent as an intern so my managers trusted me to lead calls and complete tasks on my own.
Support & Guidance
My managers were always there for me if I needed any help or advice. They would allow me opportunities to explore other areas of Finance as well as I wanted to have a broader understanding of Finance at NBCUniversal too. We had weekly calls one-to-one where I could raise any issues or struggles I have been having. They were really supportive of me wanting to grow/develop as much as I could in this role.
Culture
The atmosphere at NBCUniversal is like no other - everyone is extremely friendly and open to having a chat about anything. The office has a very welcoming environment and is not intimidating.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement year as I have learned so much about the Finance industry. Being able to actually work for a year solidified my desire to work in Finance in the future as it gave me a deeper understanding of what work life is really like. University can only teach so much, but being able to put some things in practice helped a lot!
Yes
Be prepared when it comes to the assessment stage and ensure you have done research on the company. Not only will this help you when being interviewed, but it will also help you understand more about NBCUniversal as a company and if their values are right for you. Also ensure that you have thought of answers to situational/behavioural questions to make sure you're prepared.
