Overview
My role involved developing internal tools for Oracle as well as fixing bugs and creating features for Oracle Microservices. I used Java, JavaScript and React as well as Docker, Kubernetes and Maven . I also completed tasks using Linux. Furthermore, I had the opportunity to sit the Oracle Certified Associate (OCA) Java SE 8 Programmer exam which I passed.
Skills
I have greatly improved my programming and problem solving skills due to programming every day along with sitting and passing the Oracle Certified Associate (OCA) Java SE 8 Programmer exam. I didn't have much experience with Linux before my placement but I am glad to day that my skills with relation to Linux have greatly improved. Moreover, I improved my communication skills due to the Oracle intern mentor programme.
Responsibilities
I was given a good amount of responsibility during my placement. I really appreciated working on tools that were being used by many people each day.
Support & Guidance
I received a lot of guidance due to more experienced team members being very supportive and answering any questions I had. I also really enjoyed taking part in the mentor programme and have learned a lot from my mentor.
Culture
The company culture was very positive and friendly. Everyone was very supportive and offered help whenever I needed it.
Your Impressions
I loved my time at Oracle. I have developed so much as a programmer and developer and appreciated working on tools that are being used by many people every day. Everyone was very friendly and supportive if I had a problem. Oracle met and exceeded my expectations and I would definitely go back if I had the chance.
Yes
Make sure you understand the principles of Object Oriented programming. A knowledge of design patterns is also good and would help you to stand out. Have a knowledge about web and cloud development such as what JSON is etc. It's not about being able to answer every question correctly, it also about showing an interest and an enthusiasm for software development. Research Oracle and specifically the Belfast Commerce organisation and their company history.
