Overview
My role consisted of a variation of Business Analysis and Software Development. The BA role consisted of engaging with stakeholders, running workshops to gather requirements and building process flows or completing project governance, depending on the project. Software Development tasks consisted of taking requirements gathered by the team and developing code for in-house APIs
Skills
I have developed my soft skills of presenting and working in a team, as well as being able to facilitate meetings and gather requirements. I have also developed my technical skills, with technologies of Java, SQL, Spring Boot and GraphQL, as well as using DevOps tools
Responsibilities
I was given a lot of responsibility throughout the placement, as well as lots of choice on what I wanted to work on. I was treated as a normal member of the team, rather than a trainee, and was able to take on a range of responsibilities and tasks.
Support & Guidance
I received good support and guidance throughout the placement, from my manager and wider team. Everyone was very welcoming and always willing to spend time explaining things that were new to me.
Culture
Fidelity has a very good culture; it is a company driven a lot by employee experience and there were lots of initiatives that showed this, such as catch-up days and weekly allocated time for learning and development. The company is very open and you are able to make connections throughout the business, not just in your team.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement year at Fidelity. I gained a wide array of skills and exposure that I would never have experienced through my University degree. It was a great introduction to working life.
Yes
Fidelity International is a great company, with an incredible international reach. When applying, make sure you know what the company stands for and its history, and why you think you'll fit in. When joining, don't be afraid to ask questions and reach out to others in the company - the size of the company can seem overwhelming but it provides a great wealth of knowledge from some of the best people in the industry.
